How do cells, synapses, and circuits give rise to computations in our own human brain?
The brain is the most complex processor we know of, built from a diverse array of cells, communicating through complex signalling.
We are a new research team at Hospital del Mar Research Institute (HMRIB), using the unique opportunity offered by surgical patient samples to understand how human circuits are arranged to process information. Through close research-clinic collaboration, we apply cutting-edge electrophysiology and super-resolution imaging approaches to explore cell and synapse function in humans, ultimately aiming to understand how human brain computations arise, and are specifically altered in disease.
Our recent preprint demonstrates that hippocampal CA3 comprises two molecularly distinct cell types, with distinct functional and connective properties, challenging the model of CA3 as one uniform network. This work was highlighted by The Transmitter.
